The Toronto Argonauts and Football Toronto launched the Helmet Bank in 2023 with a $150,000 commitment from the CFL club. The mission is direct: remove the single largest equipment cost standing between a school and a viable football program by loaning certified helmets at no charge, and covering every associated cost for as long as those helmets remain in service.
Helmet costs had been quietly ending programs. At $300 to $600 per unit, plus mandatory reconditioning and recertification, a full roster's worth of head protection can exceed an entire athletic department's annual budget. More than 150 helmets reached schools in 2023, followed by 200 in 2024, keeping teams on the field with equipment that meets current safety certification.
In 2025 the Toronto Argonauts Alumni Association joined the program, bringing fundraising support and mentorship from former players. That combination — professional club, local organization, and alumni network — is what gives the Helmet Bank durability past any single funding cycle, and what makes it a model other cities can copy.

Football Toronto has equipped every high school team in the city with video and analytics technology previously reserved for well-funded programs. Three Pixellot Air camera systems and full Vidswap accounts now serve more than 40 teams and roughly 2,000 student-athletes between the ages of 13 and 18. The cameras film automatically; the software turns the footage into a usable coaching platform.
The effect is a change in how the game is taught. Coaches break down film with precision, isolating tactical execution and correcting technique against evidence rather than memory. Players watch their own reps, study scheme, and develop the analytical habits that separate athletes who plateau from athletes who keep climbing.
The recruiting consequence is just as important. High-quality footage is the currency of university recruitment, and Toronto athletes can now assemble professional-grade highlight tapes for scouts and coaches across North America. Access to exposure, not just access to a field, is what turns a high school season into a pathway.
